Engine eating itself

Hey All

My daughter ran our sequoia out of oil. It had a leaky valve cover gasket and didn't tell me, anyway I was driving it last night and it started making internal noise which sounds metallic and internal in nature. I'm guessing the engine is done for even though it seems to run well and no codes are thrown. How difficult is it to pull the heads and inspect and change valves, lifters and rods if necessary? I have done the timing belt and the starter on this car and figure the heads can't be much worse, but it might require something I can't see or am aware of. I am also aware that I need to inspect the cylinders and crankshaft and bearings also, can this be done by just pulling the pan? If I have to pull the engine I can but I am trying to minimize labor on my part. Thanks so much........
